4.1 Pour the bay leaves, dried hawthorn, cardamom and ginger into the pot, and add enough water

5.2 Add a spoonful of white sugar (brown sugar or rock sugar will do)

6. Bring to a boil over high heat, then switch to medium-low heat and simmer for 45-60 minutes.

7. Add salt to taste before serving.
