Southern almond, northern almond, fig and lean meat soup is a very good health-preserving soup. We know that almonds are divided into southern almonds and northern almonds. Bitter apricots (i.e. northern apricots) contain hydrocyanic acid, and eating only 20 or 30 seeds can cause poisoning or even death. However, this component will be decomposed after heating, so there is absolutely no problem in putting it in soup or cooking sugar water.

Sweet apricots (also known as southern apricots) also contain hydrocyanic acid, but the amount is smaller and their ability to relieve asthma and cough is also weaker. Almond paste made from northern and southern apricots can help with bowel movements, relieve coughs and moisten the lungs. The almonds that we eat as snacks in our daily lives have similar effects, but their medicinal strength is slightly weaker.

In addition to almonds and Chinese apricots which contain hydrocyanic acid, ginkgo (i.e. gingko nuts) also contain a small amount of hydrocyanic acid, so it is not suitable to be eaten raw in large quantities. However, eating it raw has the effect of clearing away heat. If you want to try it, you should limit yourself to eating a dozen or so.

Method: 20g southern apricot, 10g northern apricot, 6 figs, 1 candied date, 400g lean meat (or pork tendon)

Wash and cut the lean meat or pork tendon into pieces, blanch them in boiling water to remove the blood. The soup made from this kind of meat will be sweeter. Wash the apricots, figs and candied dates, and cook with the lean meat for 1.5 hours. Add salt to taste and then you can serve.

Ginkgo has the effects of lowering cholesterol (i.e. clearing blood vessels), strengthening the kidneys and relieving cough. People with weak constitution can simmer it and mix it with medicine. Those with nocturia can simmer it and eat it with honey. Those with excessive leucorrhea can simmer it and cook it with egg and sugar water. However, it should be noted that although bean curd sticks with ginkgo and egg sugar water are commonly used nowadays, it is not suitable for people with weak constitution to drink.

Fig [Functions and indications] Strengthens the stomach and intestines, reduces swelling and detoxifies. It is used to treat enteritis, dysentery, constipation, hemorrhoids, sore throat, carbuncle, scabies, relieve throat pain, stimulate appetite and expel parasites. It is used for loss of appetite, abdominal distension and pain, hemorrhoids and constipation, indigestion, hemorrhoids, rectal prolapse, diarrhea, insufficient milk, sore throat, heat dysentery, cough with sputum, etc.
