Screw vegetable is a perennial herb. There are creeping branches underground, and when mature, the top swells into a spiral fleshy tuber. The stem is erect, 30 to 120 cm high, square, with opposite leaves, ovate to oblong-ovate, and covered with short stiff hairs on both sides. It blooms in summer, with lip-shaped, light purple flowers in cymes; the corolla is about 1.2 cm long, with a hairy ring inside the tube, the upper lip is upright, the lower lip is three-lobed, and the middle lobe is nearly round. The nutlets are oval and tuberculate. It likes to grow in warm and humid places or near water.

It can be found wild or cultivated throughout my country, but is rare in western Beijing, where it is mostly found in Hebei and other places bordering western Beijing.
