Inflammatory Bowel Disease Diet

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Diet

When problems occur in the intestines, symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, etc. This condition is often related to intestinal inflammation. Patients should pay attention to the food they eat. So what bad foods should be avoided in the diet for inflammatory bowel disease? People with inflammatory bowel disease must not eat raw or cold food, nor should they eat overly hot or spicy food. If you want to eat fruit, you can steam it before eating, such as apples, pears, etc.

1. Dietary considerations for inflammatory bowel disease

Follow the principle of a semi-liquid or even residue-free full-liquid diet, and gradually add different foods as the condition improves. Start with a liquid diet that you can tolerate, then a semi-liquid diet, and then solid food. Try adding one or two foods every few days, but these foods should not cause any symptoms to occur or worsen. If you can tolerate a fiber-containing diet, you can eat easily digestible foods such as tender, cooked vegetables, canned or cooked fruits, and starches such as cooked oatmeal, whole-wheat noodles, and tortillas. During remission, a variety of foods can be eaten as tolerated, including fruits, vegetables, a variety of grains, lean meats, and low-fat or fat-free dairy products. During the active stage of the disease, abdominal pain, diarrhea and poor appetite can lead to nutritional impairment, and the hormones commonly used in active stage treatment can also increase protein consumption, so energy and protein intake should be increased during this period.

After disease activity is under control, the following foods may be recommended: light fruit juice, applesauce, canned fruit, oatmeal, boiled chicken, fish, hard-boiled eggs, mashed potatoes, rice or noodles, bread, etc. Avoid allergic foods. If you find that you have a similar reaction every time you eat a certain food, you should be wary of whether you are allergic to it and can choose other foods instead.

2. Other considerations for inflammatory bowel disease

Eliminating tension and anxiety and enhancing confidence in treatment are also crucial for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. On weekdays, you should keep a happy and peaceful mood, avoid adverse mental stimulation, and reduce emotional tension. Pay attention to the combination of work and rest. During severe or acute attacks, you should rest in bed to reduce physical exertion. During the recovery period, you can choose appropriate sports according to your own situation. It is appropriate to choose some soothing aerobic exercises, such as Tai Chi, yoga, walking or jogging, swimming, etc.

Introduction to Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an idiopathic intestinal inflammatory disease involving the ileum, rectum, and colon. Clinical manifestations include diarrhea, abdominal pain, and even bloody stools. This disease includes ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). Ulcerative colitis is a continuous inflammation of the colon mucosa and submucosa. The disease usually affects the rectum first and gradually spreads to the entire colon. Crohn's disease can affect the entire digestive tract and is a non-continuous full-thickness inflammation. The most common sites involved are the terminal ileum, colon, and perianal area.

High-risk population and hazards of inflammatory bowel disease

High-risk groups: Everyone.

Hazards: As inflammatory bowel disease progresses, corresponding complications will occur: severe cases of ulcerative colitis will cause massive bleeding in the lower gastrointestinal tract, resulting in hemorrhagic shock and bloated intestines. In addition, it will also cause toxic megacolon; Crohn's disease patients will experience intestinal stenosis, intestinal perforation, abscesses, intestinal fistulas, and may also penetrate into the abdominal cavity and skin, causing life-threatening danger.
