What foods are good for gastric retention?

Each type of food has different nutritional components, so we should also have a reasonable diet in our daily life, eating a variety of foods in rotation, especially those with medicinal value. Some foods have anti-inflammatory and heat-removing effects, while others can aid digestion. So what foods are good for gastric retention? When this problem occurs, you can choose food to slowly improve it. Foods you can eat include yam, egg custard, etc.

1. What should patients with gastric retention eat?

Yam

Yam has the effect of nourishing the spleen and stomach, is beneficial to the digestion and absorption of the spleen and stomach, and can promote the absorption and utilization of nutrients. 2-3 times a week, the yam needs to be soaked in salt water immediately after slicing to prevent oxidation and blackening.

Colostrum

Cabbage is high in dietary fiber, which can promote intestinal peristalsis and prevent constipation. Stewed cabbage helps digestion, so it is most suitable for people with poor gastrointestinal function or illness. It is edible for the general population and can be eaten frequently, but patients with stones should eat less.

Egg Custard

Eggs are rich in protein and amino acids needed by the human body. They are rich in nutritional value and are easily absorbed by the human body. The egg custard is soft and suitable for the conditioning of patients with gastrointestinal diseases. It can be eaten 3-4 times a week before meals.

2. Causes of gastric retention

Gastric retention or delayed gastric emptying refers to the accumulation of gastric contents without timely emptying.

Functional gastric retention is mostly caused by lack of gastric tone. In addition, gastric motility disorders caused by gastric or other abdominal surgery, central nervous system diseases, neuropathy caused by diabetes, and vagotomy can all cause this disease. Uremia, acidosis, hypokalemia, hypocalcemia, systemic or intra-abdominal infection, severe pain, severe anemia, and the use of antipsychotics and anticholeretic drugs can also cause this disease.

3. Clinical manifestations of gastric retention

Vomiting is the main symptom of this disease and can occur day or night, 1 to several times a day. Vomitus is often old food and generally does not contain bile. Upper abdominal distension and pain are also common. Abdominal pain may be dull, cramping, or burning. Symptoms may be temporarily relieved after vomiting. Acute patients may suffer from dehydration and electrolyte metabolism disorders; chronic patients may suffer from malnutrition and weight loss. Severe or prolonged vomiting may cause alkali poisoning and hand and foot cramps due to the massive loss of gastric acid and potassium ions.

Physical examination revealed signs of dehydration, upper abdominal distension, mid-upper abdominal tenderness, and splashing sounds. If a gastric shape is seen and there is an increase in gastric peristaltic waves from left to right, it usually indicates obstruction at the gastric outlet; if only a gastric shape is seen without peristaltic waves, it indicates lack of gastric tone.
