What is a staple food

Staple food refers to the main source of calories for three meals. The staple food in the south is mainly rice, while in the north it is pasta. These ingredients contain relatively high starch which can increase calories for the human body. Staple foods are the main source of energy for the human body. These ingredients are what we must eat for three meals a day. We should pay attention to the daily supplement of staple foods. Only by supplementing the body with enough calories can we meet the functioning of our body's organs.

Staple food is the main food, which refers to the main food traditionally on the table and the main source of energy required. Refers to the food that constitutes the main source of energy for local residents, which for us Chinese is cereal crops. Cereals and potatoes are the main source of energy for the Chinese people. We cannot do without rice, steamed buns, pancakes, noodles or other cereals and potato products for every meal.

The staple foods are rice, wheat, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc.:

1. Rice: It is one of the main ingredients in Chinese people's daily diet and the staple food in southern China. Rice can be mixed with the five flavors to provide almost all the nutrients needed by the whole body;

2. Wheat: Wheat is one of the three major grains, almost all of which is used as food, and only about one-sixth is used as feed. Wheat can be ground into flour to make bread, steamed buns, biscuits, noodles and other foods;

3. Corn: Also known as maize, corn, corn tastes sweet and can be used to make various dishes, such as corn cakes, corn juice, etc. It is also the main raw material for industrial alcohol and shochu;

4. Potatoes: It is the fourth most important food crop in the world, after wheat, rice and corn. Potatoes, also known as ground eggs, potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc., are the tubers of the Solanaceae family. It is one of the world's five major crops along with wheat, rice, corn and sorghum;

5. Sweet potato: also known as sweet potato, mainly distributed south of 40° north latitude. China is the world's largest sweet potato producer, with the largest cultivated area in Asia, followed by Africa and America in third place.

The harm of not eating staple food

The appropriate dietary energy composition recommended by WHO is: 55%~65% energy from carbohydrates; 20%~30% energy from fat; and 11%~15% energy from protein. During exercise, the body mainly relies on carbohydrates to supply energy, maintain exercise intensity, and provide energy for muscles and brain.

Unlike protein and fat, the body's carbohydrate reserves are very limited. If the body does not get enough carbohydrates during exercise, it will cause muscle fatigue and lack of motivation. Not only that, if the diet lacks staple foods for a long time, it will lead to low blood sugar levels, causing dizziness, palpitations, brain dysfunction and other problems. In severe cases, it can lead to hypoglycemia coma.
