What are the taboos of eating kelp?

What are the taboos of eating kelp?

Kelp is a common ingredient in daily life. Many people like to eat it, especially cold kelp shreds. Some people can eat a lot of it in one meal. In fact, although kelp is delicious, it also has some eating taboos. Everyone must know this and never damage their health because of momentary greed.

1. Don’t eat kelp as a staple food

You cannot use kelp as your staple food for a long time, as this will result in excessive iodine intake and will affect your health. Moreover, kelp contains a certain amount of arsenic, and excessive intake of arsenic can cause poisoning. Therefore, before eating kelp, it should be rinsed with water to dissolve the arsenic in water.

2. Kelp cannot be soaked for a long time

Do not soak kelp for a long time before eating it, because if it is soaked for too long, the nutrients in the kelp, such as water-soluble vitamins, inorganic salts, etc. will dissolve in the water, and the nutritional value will be greatly reduced.

If the kelp becomes less tough after being soaked in water, as if it has been boiled, it means it has gone bad and can no longer be eaten. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that kelp is cold in nature and people with weak spleen and stomach should avoid eating it.

3. Don’t drink tea or eat fruit immediately after eating kelp

Do not drink tea or eat sour fruits immediately after eating kelp, because kelp is rich in iron, and the above two foods will hinder the absorption of iron in the body.

4. Special groups should be careful when eating kelp

Patients with hyperthyroidism should never eat kelp, because kelp contains a large amount of iodine, which will aggravate the condition if consumed. Pregnant women and nursing mothers should also not eat too much kelp. This is because the iodine in kelp can enter the body of the fetus and infant through blood circulation and cause thyroid dysfunction. Kelp is rich in nutritional value and tastes delicious, so it is a favorite food for many people.
