Can gout patients eat spinach?

Gout patients suffer particularly from an attack, so they must pay attention to their daily care and pay more attention to their diet, being selective in what they eat. Spinach is an economical green vegetable that is rich in iron, but can people with gout eat spinach? Yes, you can eat it, but be sure to blanch the spinach with hot water before eating it. The purpose is to remove the oxalic acid contained in the spinach. Oxalic acid cannot be absorbed by gout patients and cannot be eaten by anyone.

Purine is the main substance that causes an increase in uric acid in the blood. Therefore, gout patients should strictly control their purine intake. In dietary control, many people know that they should avoid or eat less high-purine foods to reduce the onset of gout, such as animal offal, seafood, and beer, and eat more alkaline foods and vegetables. Among vegetables, spinach should be avoided, which is easily overlooked by people. Why can't gout patients eat spinach?

Because spinach contains oxalic acid, cooking it with calcium-rich foods (such as soy products) will form calcium oxalate precipitates. Gout patients with calcium oxalate stones should not eat it. So in order to dispel concerns, if your gout has developed into stones, you should take the initiative to avoid it, just in case.

However, gout patients are not completely unable to eat spinach, because every 100 grams of spinach contains 25 to 150 mg of purine, which is a medium-purine food and has much lower purine content than offal and meat. Purine is easily soluble in water. If you blanch it in water before cooking, about 50% to 90% of it will dissolve in water and be removed. Spinach contains a large amount of plant crude fiber, which has a laxative effect; it contains carotene, which can maintain normal vision and epithelial cell function; it has a high vitamin K content, which can assist in the treatment of nosebleeds, etc. As long as the amount consumed is controlled, about 80 to 100 grams per meal, eating spinach is beneficial and harmless.

This shows that gout patients are not completely unable to eat spinach, but they can't eat it in large quantities. They can eat a small amount, but they must be very careful.
