Pharmacological effects of dried kudzu root

①Effect on the circulatory system: The flavonoids extracted from Pueraria root can increase the blood flow to the brain and coronary vessels.

After injection of Pueraria lobata flavonoids into the internal carotid artery of anesthetized dogs, cerebral blood flow increased and vascular resistance decreased accordingly, with the effect lasting for 2 to 20 minutes. If injected intravenously, the increase in cerebral blood flow was milder and it could not eliminate the effect of adrenaline and norepinephrine in constricting cerebral blood vessels. However, it can improve cerebral circulation in patients with hypertensive arteriosclerosis and its effect is mild.

Injection of Pueraria flavonoids and Pueraria wine extract into the coronary arteries and veins of dogs can increase coronary blood flow and reduce vascular resistance.

Intraperitoneal and subcutaneous injection of Pueraria wine extract, intraperitoneal injection of its decoction and crystals extracted from Pueraria root to rats all had a protective effect on the cardiac ischemia response caused by posterior pituitary hormone. Oral administration of Pueraria root decoction had no obvious antihypertensive effect on hypertensive dogs.

It is reported that the decoction of Pueraria root (produced in Japan) contains both cardiostimulatory and cardioinhibitory components.

Antispasmodic effect Both Chinese Pueraria root (variety not specified) and Japanese Pueraria root sold on the market contain flavonoids, which have a papaverine-like antispasmodic effect on the isolated intestine of mice and guinea pigs. However, the antispasmodic effect of Chinese Pueraria root is stronger than that of Japanese Pueraria root, which may be related to the larger and more flavonoids it contains. This antispasmodic component can counteract the effects of histamine and acetylcholine. Other isoflavone derivatives isolated from Japanese Pueraria root have no obvious acetylcholine expansion effect.
