Alternatively, use a knife to cut an X shape into the potato. 5. Place the potatoes in a microwave-safe dish. You can wrap the potatoes in a damp paper towel first. This will keep the potatoes moist and prevent them from shrinking, but the skins will be soft after baking. 6. Put the plate into the microwave and select the baking time. Choose a baking time based on the size of your potatoes and the power of your microwave. Medium to large potatoes should be baked over high heat for 8 to 12 minutes. Bake for the first 5 minutes, then turn over so the potatoes cook evenly. Return to the microwave for 3 to 5 minutes, depending on how soft it is. If it is not cooked through, grill it over high heat for another minute, checking it every minute to see if it is cooked through. If you are baking several potatoes at a time, you will need to extend the baking time by half. For example, if one large potato takes 10 minutes to bake, two large potatoes will take 16 to 17 minutes. If you like crispy potatoes, you can microwave them for 5 to 6 minutes and then bake them in the oven at 200 degrees Celsius for 20 minutes.
