Cut the cucumber vertically with the knife, at a 90-degree angle. Stop cutting when you reach the chopsticks, then continue cutting until the cucumber is completely sliced.

After slicing one side, flip the cucumber over so the uncut side is facing up. This time, slice diagonally, one slice after another, until the entire cucumber is sliced.

Cut the cucumber into small pieces.

Add 1 tablespoon of white sugar and mix well. (Adding sugar or salt to marinate the cucumber will make it release water and make it firmer. Since it will be soaked in sauce later, marinating it with sugar will prevent it from being too salty.)
